PROPS:  The use of props can add meaning to a dance as well as being used for decoration.  Props are usually objects which can be carried around or moved.  They may be used to enhance movement of a dancer such as a chair or a cane to lean on.

*THIS IS NOT PART OF THE SET!

PROJECTION:  Nowadays many productions use projected video or visuals in their design.  This can be projected onto a cyclorama in place of a  back drop or onto a gauze or onto the floor or onto anything really.  You can even have holograms on stage! Projection can be used in place of or as well as lighting, with interesting results.

SET DESIGN / PHYSICAL SETTING

(see also LIGHTING)

All the scenery, furniture and props the audience sees at a production of a show make up the set design. The overall look of the set also gives the audience information about the director or choreographer's concept of the production.  Set design can:

  • * Suggest the style and tone of the whole production

  • * Create mood and atmosphere

  • * Give clues as to the specific time and place of the action

  • * Offer creative possibilities for the movement and grouping of the performers.

Set designs for dance can vary from a bare stage with simple lighting to a complicated set whch uses backdrops, gauzes and large pieces of scenery.
