COSTUME

Costumes may be designed to help the dancer get in to character and to help the audience understand the intention of the choreography. Costumes can be used to portray the following:

  • period         (eg.1950s)

  • character     (eg. Prince/ mouse)

  • theme              (eg. fantasy)

  • mood               (eg. spooky)

  • nationality         (eg. Spanish)

  • style                   (eg. ballet)

  • climate/season   (eg. cold, winter)

  • time of day      (eg. morning)

  • location  (eg. at the beach)

  •

When designing a dance costume it is important to consider the following:

  • fabric

  • texture

  • comfort

  • practicality

  • strength

  • colour

Masks - can make a theme very clear
Footwear - can convey mood, character
as well as the dance style. eg. tap
D

Dancers may use costumes to influence their actions - for example swishing a skirt or being able to climb easily without restriction.

PROPS:  The use of props can add meaning to a dance as well as being used for decoration.  Props are usually objects which can be carried around or moved.  They may be used to enhance movement of a dancer such as a chair or a cane to lean on
