What is a motif?

A motif is a series of actions which link together - usually based on a stimulus.

For example for a dance with a stimulus of 'Titanic' a basic motif might be created using actions such as a leap into a dive then a roll using big arm gestures.

To make choreography more interesting and to add a recognisable theme a motif can be developed or changed.
